Tradicional dances

paloteado de cortesAll the testimonies about traditional dances and representations of Navarre and Lower Navarre are gathered in this section of the Archive.

Both manifestations are grouped together because many of the traditional dances form part of a broader popular representation (Moor and Christian, "paloteadores" (participants clash poles in time with music), carnaval masquerades, pastoral dances). These representations fluctuate between being a rite or a theatrical performance, but they always have a spectacular component. The traditional spectacle could be defined as "a collective recreation of meaning in which both the tradition bearer and the recipient would take part". Also, any spectacle in general and specifically the traditional spectacle, assumes a criteria of predictability that distinguishes it from games and sports. Any spectacle, according to Helbo, urbeltzis located among various poles: 1st energy vs. desire; 2nd conceitedness vs. factual perception; 3rd pressupposition vs. frame analysis; 4th communication vs. interaction; 5th statement vs. meaning construction; 6th representation vs. simulation; 7th fiction vs. icon-sustitution. If we consider traditional spectacles called rites, they would be constituted by the following poles: energy, conceit, pressupposition, interaction, meaning construction, representation and icon-sustitution. Alternatively, in "armed" and "animal" dances, the sumulation of the representation seems to prevail. Opposingly, we see other traditional performances which are closer to theatrical or paratheatrical performances and are characterised by distinct poles (perception, communication, statement, representation, fiction...). In general all these traditional representations would be collected under this heading, as well as the testimonies about their history, meaning, present existence, retrievability, etc. Equally, all the non traditional but popular performances would be included, as the participants belong to the local place, know the origen and the non traditional sources of these perofmances (Mysteries of the birth of Christ, Living Passion, Easter, Mystery of Obanos...).

In addition, a great effort has been done to make an audiovisual registration of the rich repertoire of the traditional dances of Navarre and Lower Navarre ("palotadores" (dance with sticks), dance of Cortes, "zagi-dantza" (dance of the Wineskin), "saltar-dantza", "dantzantes" (dancers) of Muskilda, Bolantes, "bordon-dantza" (dance in celebration of St John), threshing dance, "ezpata-dantza" (sword dance)...). Apart from these audiovisual testimonies, there are others about their history, meaning, present existence and retrievability by some of the groups of dancers...

In this concrete chapter on traditional representations and dances, we cannot ignore the interesting multicultural exchange result of the increasing performances of groups of immigrant and ethnic minority collectivities. All these cultural manifestations, existing in Navarre and Lower Navarre have been indexed in the Archive.
