Traditional poetry

Traditional poetry or verse is one of the most important manifestations of oral tradition of all cultures. Intimately realted to music, it presents certain psychodynamics, techniques and an oral style that makes it indistinguishable, whether it is traditional or not. In this sense, the Archive of Immaterial Heritage of Navarre intends to provide coverage to on one hand, the traditional poetical productions that have been transmited from generation to generation, true gems of oral and immaterial patrimony; but also on the other hand, to representative examplars of present popular production that follow the same oral style. Concisely, a series of genres have been determined:

  • Aita DonostiaThe traditional song and all its subgenres.
  • The traditional and cordel romance.
  • Narrative songs and ballads.
  • Traditional sayings: adage, sayings, proverbs.
  • Traditional guessing games: conundrums, riddles and enigmas.
  • Traditional prayers: prayers and pledges, charms and spells.
  • Traditional toasts.
  • Other poetic genres: festivals opening speech, minimum poetic compositions, compositions of improvisers of poems and verses ("repentistas") and "bertsolaris" (maker of verses), troubadours, popular poets, folk singers ("joteros")..

We have omitted some oral genres, such as the epic poems for instance, since already in medieval times they disappeared from oral tradition.
