This study was to find out a policy direction most suitable for Korean traditional crafts by examining both its current conditions and the policy viewpoint for its protection. A variety of traditional crafts, mostly done by hand, is hard to survive in the current competitive market due to its poor productivity and inefficient management structure. That’s why the Korean government has set up various support systems and institutional mechanisms to protect and utilize its traditional crafts such as designated cultural intangible assets, and opening a new market for crafts. Nevertheless, most of the traditional crafts items are now facing a threat to extinction. crafts items such as a Korean traditional hat called Gat or woodenware as well as important intangible cultural assets failed to show their own creativity. It is because the relevant policy just demands the repeated reproduction of the designated crafts as a cultural asset, not the creative innovation by raising spontaneous dynamics in traditional crafts. As a result, this study considered France’s traditional crafts situations and its support systems as an exemplary case. The French government has made an effort to creatively inherit traditional crafts as an intangible cultural asset through its support systems, institutions, and related government agencies. France’s policy viewpoint is to guarantee ‘transmission of mechanism’ and ‘incessant innovation of the transmitted mechanism’ through France’s national support. This viewpoint helps transmit intangible cultural assets creatively and raise the survival rate of crafts.Korea also should consider its ‘production mechanism’ more importantly than a ‘form’ as a product of action. Accordingly, the effort in policy to open a new market for crafts being produced based on the specified mechanism should bsed de. However, more importantly, a new policy viewpoint of raising cultural diversity through the long-term innovation of transmitted mechanism should bseestablished. Creating a new traditional culture through the skill transmission term inovation of traditional crafts helps raise the effe shoeness of cultural policy that wishes to conservem should bseetraditional crafts as a motive force of the creative development of a society.
