La iglesia tenía un papel importante en lo que respecta a la relación de Villava con los pueblos de alrededor, ya que todos pertenecían al mismo arciprestazgo, dirigido por el arcipreste. Este convocaba, por ejemplo, concursos de religión para los estudiantes de los distintos pueblos.
